We caught up with Mariam Tawfik, whose exhibition The Shamash stays the same but the Atua is different will be on view at Enjoy 12 April—24 May 2025.

What are your pronouns?
She/Her.
Where are you living/working right now?
The beautiful Tāmaki Makaurau, right next to Te Ahi-kā-a-Rakataura.
What do you do and why do you do it?
I make art and sound about Iraq, Aotearoa, religion, and the crossovers of heres and theres and us and thems and a dream of a new narrative that was always the way.
What are you working on at the moment?
I am working on a story about a taniwha found in the river Euphrates.
What do you love about art?
No four eyes or ears are the same. When you share work, it’s not yours anymore and I love that.
What are you reading/listening to/watching at the moment?
Sopranos on mute with Yas Khidr in the background whilst reading both Wisdom of the Idiots and Mutual Dreaming. (I will finish neither)
Who is your art crush?
Local artist Tyson Campbell, amazing artist and divine story teller. Iraqi painter and sculptor, Jewad Selim. Sound artist, Julmud.
If you had one wish for the art world what would it be?
More wishes.
