Incursion

March 23 2018

At the end of last year, we said goodbye to our long-standing photographer Shaun Matthews, who volunteered with the gallery for over two years. Shaun is an incredible photographer whose work Incursion is currently on display at Otari Wilton's Bush, the Wellington Botanic Gardens, Mount Victoria and Bush City at Te Papa.

Focusing on the impact ecological weeds have on native ecosystems, Incursion juxtaposes the beauty of weeds with the smothering devastation they cause. Presented as a series of large photographic collages on fabric, the work recognises weeds as both opportunists and colonisers—plants that were once introduced as domestic reminders of foreign countries and are now a threat to our parks and native bush reserves.

Incursion has been funded by the Wellington City Council Public Arts Fund for Wellington Parks Week 2018, and will be available to view from 10 March – 7 April 2018.
