Ko wai koe?
Ko Hamish tēnei, nō Ōtepoti au.
Where are you living/working right now?
Both home and workshop (they're the same place) are in Te Motu Kairangi - Miramar, Wellington.
What do you do and why do you do it?
I make anything I can, because I like to make things. It's compulsive tbh. I grew up around the strong belief that anything could be made or fixed - one Grandad was a fitter-turner for the railways in Dunedin, and the other an auto-electrician; I absorbed their love of making, and familiarity with materials early on, so that's a natural part of my approach to art. My work now includes film, exhibitions, and industrial design; with woodwork, metalwork, drafting, digital design and fabrication (CNC and 3D printing).
What are you working on at the moment?
Right now - figuring out the legs/platform support for the Enjoy sculpture!
What do you love about art?
It's in everyone - I really like that, innate
What are you reading/listening to/watching at the moment?
I was recently gifted some records! I've been enjoying listening to Aldous Harding, John Prine, Kate Bush, Marlon Williams, Fur Patrol, Brian Eno.
Who is your art crush?
I especially liked Et al.'s that's obvious! that's right! that's true! at Christchurch Art Gallery in 2009; and, works from The Estate of L. Budd in Embodied Knowledge which I installed at the Dowse in 2018.
If you had one wish for the art world what would it be?
I'd love for more accessible art, in all senses. I kind of want to touch everything so, more art I can touch; but also conceptually, for an art world that's more connected to people. More public art; better supported public galleries; and greater access to making for people generally.
