Ko wai koe?
Lily Worrall, an artist and filmmaker from Tāmaki Makaurau.
Where are you living & working right now?
I’m currently based in Prishtina, Kosovo.
What do you do and why do you do it?
I archive, list and collect from my family and friends. I have an interest in New Zealand film and TV, particularly from the 1980s and 1990s. I am constantly cataloguing and consuming the media of the time. From this research, new projects present themselves.
What are you working on at the moment?
Currently I am finishing my work for moon iron wings, my upcoming show at Enjoy.
What is your earliest memory in an art gallery?
My earliest memory was visiting the Auckland Art Gallery with my mum, and falling in love with the old fountain that was there before the renovation.
Do you listen to music when making? Who is your favourite musician right now?
I don’t listen to music when I am editing, but I listen to it when I read, write, and research. Douglas Lilburn’s album Lilburn: Electro-acoustic Works helped set a certain tone during my time at the Rita Angus cottage.
Is there an artwork that changed the way you view the world?
I feel like I’ve had this feeling with so many works, particularly films. Most recently I saw A Want in Her by Myrid Carten, which details the filmmaker's complicated relationship with her mother who suffers from alcoholism. The way Carten blended different sources of media, film mediums, and perspectives in the film was beautiful.
If you had one wish for the art world, what would it be?
Proper state funding for artists.
